Who can be a proctor?
The most acceptable choice for a proctor is a person currently employed at any level as an educator (elementary, secondary or post-secondary). The person could be a teacher, counselor, administrator or extension educator. Other acceptable choices include head librarians or local clergy.

Parents may not serve as proctors for their children unless approved by Independent Study High School (ISHS) administration, and then only in an extraordinary circumstance. If you feel your circumstance is extraordinary, you will need to secure approval from ISHS administration.

Military families may use base education officers, chaplains and superior commissioned officers. Families living overseas may use embassy or consulate officials or other approved non-family members.

All proctors must be approved by the Independent Study High School or by the local school district if the student is enrolled in the district and planning to transfer credit to one of the district’s schools. Students who need to change their proctor must submit a completed change of status form to the Independent Study High School.

If a student and proctor are planning to use the WayCool course management system, both must have a unique e-mail address. Due to the security features within the WayCool course management system, a student and proctor cannot share an e-mail address.

How do I request a transcript?
Transcripts will include a list of completed ISHS courses and a summary of accepted credit, if any, from other schools. A request for an official University of Nebraska–Lincoln Independent Study High School transcript must be submitted in writing. Requests from students under 18 must be signed by the student and parent or legal guardian. Requests from students 18 years or older must be signed by the student. The first copy of your transcript is provided free of charge as are all copies provided to the high school you are currently enrolled in or are seeking to enroll in. Additionally all transcripts requested for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will be provided at no cost.

All duplicate copies beyond this carry a processing fee of $5.00 each. For records inactive three or more years an automatic $5.00 processing fee per transcript copy applies.

The request should include the student’s full name, ID number and the complete mailing address where the transcript should be sent, including the phone number. The ISHS will, without prior consent or cost, release student transcripts to a requesting high school if the student is enrolled in, or is transferring to, the requesting school.

Can I get a printed bulletin?
To request a bulletin, you can either email us at extservice@unl.edu or call Customer Service at 402-472-2175 or toll free at 866-700-4747 or go to Contact Us on the ISHS website.

Can high school students enroll in college credit courses?
Yes, many high school students get a head start on their college education by enrolling in UNL independent study courses. Please seek advice from your guidance counselor or learning center director before enrolling to make sure you are prepared for the course and understand the requirements. Permission to enroll must be obtained from our assistant director/academic adviser. If you plan to attend an institution other than the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, we recommend that you check the credit transfer policies of that institution before enrolling in our program. UNL course credit by independent study is widely accepted; however, transfer credit must be approved by the receiving institution.

How do I access my High School course(s)?
The course content (online and/or printed) will guide you through the course. If your course includes course content online, you may begin your course once you’ve received your log-in information by e-mail. You should receive this e-mail to access WayCool, the online course management system, within two business days after enrollment. The subject line for this email is, "WayCool Profile Info". If you do not receive this e-mail, contact Customer Service.

If you enroll in a print-only course or if you choose to proceed through your course from printed materials, you will access your course from the “course content printed” materials (printed syllabus purchased with course).

I have questions about what courses I should take. Do you have an academic advisor?
Yes. Your academic advisor is Dr. Bob Mathiasen. Contact him at 402-472-9329 or rmathiasen1@unl.edu to discuss degree requirements or other issue related to the program.

How do I pay for these courses?
You’ll pay for your courses when you register, by using a credit card, check or purchase order. We are not allowed to bill student accounts. If you have a scholarship, tuition assistance, G. I. Bill or another source to pay tuition, please call Customer Service Office for payment details, 402-472-2175.

Does my financial aid cover these courses?
Generally speaking, to be eligible for most scholarships and financial aid, students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) in on-campus (resident) courses. Federal financial aid is not typically available for distance education courses where enrollment is accepted at any time of the year and a student can take up to 12 months to complete a course. This flexibility takes most courses out of a traditional semester timeframe on which the awarding of financial aid is normally based.

How do I get an official transcript once I’ve completed my course?
The Extended Education & Outreach Office maintains a record of your enrollment while you are completing your course work. When you complete the course, your grades will be entered into the university's permanent student record system.

Click on the following link for steps to obtain an official transcript of your work with UNL.

If you are already a UNL Blackboard user, you should already have the proper log-in information, and the course will appear in 3 business days.

The course materials listed with each course description provide all the instruction necessary to complete the course. The syllabus includes instruction similar to classroom lectures and activities. It also includes self-help materials that allow you to determine what you have learned before you must turn in assignments for evaluation. All directions for completing the course are provided in the syllabus or online through Blackboard. A detailed explanation of the components of each course and the required materials are listed in this catalog.

Students enrolled in print versions of courses, as well as some Web versions, will receive a packet of materials that includes all course materials, envelopes, cover sheets for lessons, and test request forms.
